Editor's Note
It stands on Kocatepe, 1,874 metres high, 20 km south of Afyonkarahisar and 8 km above the town of Kocatepe (Büyükkalecik). This is the place where the Great Offensive that secured the liberation of Anatolia and the Turkish nation was launched, directed and commanded by Commander-in-Chief Mustafa Kemal on 26 August 1922. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades arrived at Kocatepe on the evening of 25 August 1922 and began the Great Offensive here on the morning of 26 August. He personally directed and commanded the first phase of the offensive from the headquarters established here and from the trench that still survives.
