Editor's Note
King Menua, who reigned between 810 and 786 BC, judged that the hardships of the mountainous land he ruled could only be eased through public works, and so he built his greatest undertaking, an irrigation canal that has survived to the present day. Roughly 50 kilometers long, the Menua (Shamiram) Canal carries fresh water from the Gürpınar plain southeast of Van to the Van plain, where the capital Tushpa stood. It irrigates an area of about 5,000 hectares, making it arable and fit for harvest. The water source lies at an altitude of 1,760 meters above sea level.
