Editor's Note
The outer of the two parallel lines of the Van walls was called the "sur-u harici" (outer wall), and it was built lower than the inner wall. In a drawing by Charles Texier, the outer walls can be seen running from Van Castle down to the eastern walls of the Old City of Van and then continuing south along a straight line, while the inner walls turn slightly into the city from the previously mentioned (still surviving) tower before extending southward from there.
