Spending the winter of 1534–1535 in Baghdad, Suleiman the Magnificent organized the Ottoman state administration there and visited the city's sites of religious significance. Determined to remove the Safavid threat for good, Suleiman I went into action upon hearing that the Shah had retaken Tabriz and laid siege to Van. Arriving in Tabriz on 3 July 1535, the Ottoman sultan pursued the ever-fleeing forces of Shah Tahmasp deep into Iran, advancing as far as Dargaz. But when no trace of Tahmasp could be found, he returned to Tabriz (20 August).
