While various units were dispersed across Eastern Anatolia to take up winter quarters, the command headquarters was at Van during the winter of 1604-1605. In May 1605, realising how few troops were stationed at Van, Shah Abbas dispatched a force under the command of Allahverdi Han against the city. Cığalazade Sinan Paşa learned of this campaign only when the Persian army was a day's march from Van, which prevented the necessary preparations from being made. After the first clashes, in which the chief usher Handan Ağa was taken prisoner, the Turkish army withdrew entirely into Van Castle and came under siege.
