Editor's Note
Its minaret is a landmark structure symbolising Ottoman dominance over the region. The mosque is square in plan and covered with a flat earthen roof. According to Evliya Çelebi, it was repaired by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent in 1534. In the 1987-88 season, Prof. Dr. Taner Tarhan excavated it and uncovered the prayer hall. Part of the qibla wall and the minaret have survived to the present day. The minaret on the mosque's east façade has a square prismatic base and a cylindrical shaft. Its base and shaft are made of cut stone. The balcony railings and upper part of the minaret are in a collapsed state.
