Editor's Note
The church was built between 915 and 921 by Gagik I, King of Vaspurakan. The complex consists of the church, a palace, servants' quarters, a garden and a harbour, and is regarded as a masterpiece of architecture. The church was designed and built by a monk named Manuel. Converted into a monastery in 1113, the buildings served as the seat of the Armenian Patriarchate until 1895. They remained in use until 1918 and have survived to the present day in quite good condition. The church and its annexes are under the protection of the Republic of Turkey.
