It is the earliest village settlement in Anatolia. Hallan Çemi Mound lies in the Kozluk district of Batman province, near the village of Kaletepe, on the western shore of the reservoir area of the Batman Dam. Excavations at the mound, discovered in 1990, together with radiocarbon analyses, have shown that the settlement dates back to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period (11th millennium BC). The excavations yielded chipped-stone tools, decorated stone vessels, and various bone finds. Today, as the dam water rises, the mound is at times entirely submerged, and when the water recedes its surface finds become visible once more.
