Editor's Note
The Saint Mercurius Underground City in Saratli is one of the most important underground structures in Cappadocia dating from the Roman period, and is set apart from the others by the large church within it. Saint Mercurius, who gave the underground city its name, was a Roman commander born in Cappadocia who lived between AD 225 and 250. He was exiled for declaring his Christian faith and was martyred. Historical origin and function: although the structure's origins go back to the Bronze Age, when the region's tradition of carving volcanic tuff began, in the 3rd century AD
