Within the Garipler Cemetery there are gravestones from the Ottoman period. Most of the gravestones have headstones and inscriptions, while the graves are of the type known as "beşikli" (cradle-shaped). A study carried out years ago determined that the oldest of these graves in the Garipler Cemetery dates to 1766. When people who were not from the local area (strangers) died, a special cemetery was created at the entrance to Yukarı Develi and these individuals were buried there. For this reason the cemetery was given the name "Garipler Mezarlığı" (Cemetery of Strangers). It is also known among the people as "sınangılı mezarlık."
