The Church of Saint Theodore was carved into the easily worked Tahar ignimbrite. It is the largest early-period cave church in Cappadocia and was built in honour of the Byzantine Empress Theodora. Dating from the 11th to the 13th centuries, it contains depictions of prophets and apostles, the Deesis, the Annunciation, the Crucifixion of Christ, and depictions of saints within medallions. The church is 'T'-shaped with a central dome. The upper gallery, reached by a staircase, makes the Church of Saint Theodore unique among the churches of Cappadocia.
