Editor's Note
During the Balkan War, the defence of İzmir became important to the Ottoman state, as the Greek Navy attacked Urla, made a show of force within the Gulf of İzmir, and carried out military operations against the city. These defensive lines proved highly valuable during the British attack on İzmir in 1915. In the early years of the Republic, too, great importance was attached to these defensive lines, and part of them was renewed for possible use should the Second World War spread to Turkey. 20.
