Editor's Note
Located in the Gülbahçe neighbourhood, where the Tatar Stream meets the sea and within the grounds of the İzmir Institute of Technology, this structure sits partly on bedrock. Rectangular in plan and aligned northwest to southeast, it is popularly known as the "hamam" (bathhouse). Although local people use it for bathing in the belief that it heals wounds, the constantly bubbling natural spring water inside and the building's enclosed form show that it is not a bathhouse but a thermal spring or spa. It was built of rough-hewn and rubble stone, with brick used in places.
