Editor's Note
In Greek mythology, the nymph Echo, known as much for her chatter as for her beauty, is punished for this trait. Hera, wife of the chief god Zeus and goddess of marriage, casts a spell on Echo, so that from then on the nymph can only repeat the last word of whatever she hears. One day Echo sees the legendarily handsome Narcissus in the forest and falls in love with him. Though she longs to speak, all she can do is echo his final words. Narcissus grows bored and leaves. Echo then weeps and turns to stone. All that remains of her is the sound we call an "echo."
