Records tell us that Urla once had a great many mills. Although most of these mills have since collapsed, examples in some neighbourhoods survive today as street or district names. There are countless cases, such as On Değirmenler (Ten Mills) Street, Üç Değirmenler (Three Mills) Street, Sıra Değirmenler (Row of Mills) Street, İki Değirmencik (Top) Hill and Gülbahçe Değirmenaltı district. The most famous of all are undoubtedly the three windmills at Birgi, now out of use. The hill where the mills stand is called "Değirmentepe" (Mill Hill) or "Değirmen Dağı" (Mill Mountain) by local people.
