This site symbolizes the people of Ödemiş organizing themselves to halt the Evzone regiment that was advancing toward Ödemiş after the Greek army landed in İzmir. Here the first popular organization of the War of Independence took shape, and it was decided to form a front on the ridges of Hacı İlyas village. The village mosque was turned into a field hospital and some villagers' homes into an arsenal. On the morning of June 1, 1919, fighting broke out with Greek forces and the first shot was fired; after a struggle of five or six hours, Greek units entered the village and set the houses on fire one by one.
