Editor's Note
During the War of Independence, the Greek soldiers withdrawing from the Aydın region rounded up 94 villagers at the Koç Kuyusu site as they fled. Some of these villagers were lined up against the wall of a shed and shot or bayoneted, while others were packed inside the shed and bombs were thrown in on top of them. Those wounded in the attack were thrown into the well, and the lifeless bodies of the dead were thrown on top of them, making it impossible to climb out. Today the well and the fig-drying shed still stand exactly as they were, with the bullet holes from that day still visible. A monument was later built beside the fig shed.
