Editor's Note
The Sultan Han, on the Aksaray-Konya road, was built in 1229 by Alaeddin Keykubad I and is the largest caravanserai of the Anatolian Seljuk period. The building consists of a rectangular, north-south oriented courtyard and a nine-aisled covered section, with a kiosk mosque (köşk mescidi) at the center. It is the only han to use marble on both its inner and outer portals, and these portals are notable for their rich ornamentation. The courtyard contains arcaded sections, vaulted rooms, and two baths. Kurt Erdmann visited this han.
