Born in the village of Türkönü in Ödemiş, Gökçen Hüseyin Efe is known as a relative and follower of Çakırcalı Mehmet Efe. After Çakırcalı was shot, he became an efe and formed his own band. In 1914 he was pardoned through the mediation of Celal (Bayar) Bey, came down from the mountains and settled in the town of Fata in Tire. After the start of the Greek occupation, he decided to join the national struggle, partly through the efforts of other efes in the region, and played a major role in slowing the Greek advance.
