Sardis (Sardes), near the Sart neighbourhood of Salihli in Manisa Province, was the ancient capital of the Lydian Empire. After the fall of Lydia it became the capital of the Persian satrapy of Lydia and later a major center of Hellenistic and Byzantine culture. It lies about 9 km from Salihli and 82 km from İzmir, spreading along both sides of the İzmir-Ankara road. In 2025 Sardis and the Lydian tumuli of Bintepe were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
