Editor's Note
The Altar of Artemis (or Lydian Altar) is the oldest structure surviving to the present day in the Sanctuary of Artemis, and the focal point of the rites and ceremonies of Artemis. It has two distinct building phases; the first probably predates the temple, while the second was built together with the Hellenistic temple. Phase 1 (LA-1): the early structure consists of stepped square foundations made of limestone tufa.
