In 1994 the statues of İsmet and Mevhibe İnönü were commissioned from Metin Yurdanur by Mehmet Özel, Director General of Fine Arts at the Ministry of Culture, to be placed in a public space in Çeşme, İzmir. At the ministry's request, the İnönüs were depicted hand in hand, walking and gazing at each other lovingly, in a composition shaped by Metin Yurdanur's own interpretation. On the pedestal is inscribed İsmet İnönü's saying: "In a country where the honest are not at least as courageous as the dishonest, that country has no hope of salvation."
