Editor's Note
Located in the citadel (Ickale) in the center of Diyarbakir, Amida Mound is the place where the first settlement in central Diyarbakir began. The mound rises about 20 meters above its base, which sits 663.00 meters above sea level. The Diyarbakir Archaeological Museum Directorate and Prof. Dr. Irfan Yildiz found that the first settlement at Amida Mound dates back 8,000 years. It was established to have begun in 6100 BCE (Late Neolithic-Early Chalcolithic period) and to have continued uninterrupted to the present day. The city's name first appears in written sources in the Assyrian period, where it is recorded as Amidi, Amedi, Amidu, and Amida.
