The Monastery of Mor Kuryakos stands in the village of Ayrancı, in the Beşiri district of Batman province, on the eastern slope of Mount Kıra, at the very edge of the Tur Abdin region. Thought to have been built in the 5th century AD, the monastery long served the Syriac community as an episcopal seat. Rectangular in plan and three storeys high, it is made up of many rooms around an inner courtyard and extends below ground through galleries. As the earliest known monastery in the Batman region, it served as a model for later buildings in both architecture and the use of materials.
