The villagers believe that the person buried in the tomb was not a Muslim, but a woman who was wounded in the chest and fell as a martyr here. According to legend, this woman was the Virgin Mary, said to have been wounded in the chest while fleeing the turmoil in Ephesus and travelling towards Jerusalem. The grave runs along an east-west axis. In a statement, the village headman said he had had the tomb examined and was told that the gravestone could not belong to a Muslim. Another account is based on Alevi-Bektashi belief.
