Editor's Note
This was the first printed-cloth (calico) industrial factory established by the Turkish Republic through state initiative. It was built on an area of 65,000 m². Its foundation was laid on 25 August 1935, and it was opened with a grand ceremony by Atatürk on 9 October 1937. The inscription placed to the right of the entrance to the factory's administrative building to commemorate the day reads: 'Atatürk, in accordance with the First Industrialisation Plan, opened the first Turkish printed-cloth factory established by Sümerbank. 9 October 1937.' Its machinery and equipment were procured from the Soviet Union in exchange for citrus fruit.
