Milas is a district of Muğla, very rich in history and ancient remains, with twenty-seven notable archaeological sites within its territory. It was the first capital of ancient Caria and of the medieval Anatolian beylik of Menteşe; the nearby Mausoleum of Hecatomnus is on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.
