Editor's Note
It was founded north of Mount Honaz (Cadmus), on the bank of the Aksu Stream. It lies on the southeastern road in use since antiquity. It is one of the most important centers within Greater Phrygia. According to Xenophon, it was one of the six great cities of Phrygia. It enjoyed its most brilliant ages under Persian rule as well. From the 3rd century BC onward it lost its importance with the founding of Hierapolis and Laodikeia. In the 1st century AD it was devastated by an earthquake during the reign of Nero. The city refounded in AD 692-787 under the name Chonae, on the site of the present Honaz town center, was completely abandoned because of an earthquake.
