Editor's Note
It was founded in a mountainous pass region on the shortest route between Laodikeia and Aphrodisias. It is also a border city between Caria and Phrygia. Holding an important position within its region, the city was brought to prominence under the Pergamenes in the 2nd century BC, when its name was changed. The people of Attouda preserved throughout antiquity the opportunity they seized in the Hellenistic period, and the city kept growing steadily. According to the finds, the widespread practice of bringing in marble to construct buildings here began in the 1st century AD and increased especially in the 2nd century AD.
