Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian was born in 1840 in the village of Faraşa (Varasos; today known as Çamlıca, Kayseri) in Cappadocia. His birth name was Theodoros Annitsalihos; in some sources his surname is also given as 'Artzidis.' His father, Eleftherios, was a teacher, and his mother's name was Barbara (Frangou or Frangopoulou). He lost both parents at an early age, however, and he and his brother Vlasios were raised by their mother's sister. He was later sent first to Niğde for his education, where he stayed with his father's sister.
