Iasos lies within the Kıyıkışlacık neighbourhood of Milas in Muğla, about 26 kilometres west of the town, at the end of a small bay opening onto the Gulf of Güllük. By ancient tradition the city was founded by settlers who came by sea from Argos in the Peloponnese.
