Editor's Note
According to its endowment deed recorded in the Ottoman State Archives (EV.VKF 4/6; Akdemir, 2007:112), it was built by Hoca Bâli bin Muslihiddin Efendi in mid-Jumada al-Thani 990 (mid-July 1582). The building, which apparently survived the 1914 earthquake, is known to have remained in working order until the 1940s, its last operator being a man named Çil Ali. Later left to itself and gradually reduced to a ruin, the building was placed under protection by decision no. 853 of the İzmir No. 2 Conservation Board on 9 August 1989, but the necessary restoration has still not been carried out.
