The earliest dated archival documents concerning the Tomb of Veli Dede and the nearby Onacak Lodge (which no longer survives) date to H. 978 / 1570-71 (burdurmuzesi.gov.tr, 2009). Veli Dede, who is buried in the tomb, is known to have been one of the medical scholars of the Ottoman period, treating the mentally ill at his lodge using scientific methods. Even after Veli Dede's time, the lodge continued to serve as a center for treating the mentally ill until quite late periods. Indeed, even today the place is popularly believed to be a site of healing.
