Editor's Note
The Dara archaeological site is located in the village of Oğuz, 30 km southeast of Mardin. One of the most important settlements of Upper Mesopotamia in antiquity, Dara was founded in 505 on the initiative of Emperor Anastasius (491-518) as a military garrison town to defend the eastern frontier of the Eastern Roman Empire against the Sasanians. Spread over a wide area and consisting of structures carved into the rock, the Ancient City of Dara was protected by a 4-kilometer circuit wall. The inner citadel was built on the northern side of the city, on the flat summit of a hill 50 meters high.
