Editor's Note
It is believed to have been commissioned in the early 13th century by the Artuqid Sultan Melik Nasreddin Artuk Aslan. The building takes the form of a madrasa with an arcaded courtyard, an iwan and a two-aisled prayer hall to the south, but after many alterations, repairs and additions, little of the madrasa's original state remains. Its collapsed minaret was rebuilt in 1916-17 by the Armenian architect Serkis Lole in an eclectic style and without scaffolding. One of the most heavily altered parts of the madrasa is the mosque.
