The complex was commissioned by the Artuqid Sultan Necmeddin Ilgazi together with his brother Eminuddin. It comprised a masjid, a madrasa, a bimaristan (hospital), a zawiya, a summer open-air prayer area, a bathhouse, a fountain and a cascade fountain, though only some of these buildings survive today. Also known among local people as the Maristan, the complex is regarded as one of the earliest medical madrasas in Anatolia because of the hospital it contained.
