Editor's Note
The monastery was built as a temple by the Assyrian king Sennacherib in the 7th century BC. The Nestorian saint Mar Yakup (Jacob) converted the temple into a monastery in the 4th century AD. Locals call this spot the Hill of the Visitation of the Prophet Noah. According to the English archaeologist, traveler, and missionary Gertrude Bell, who took the earliest known photograph of the sanctuary, the site was regarded as a place of pilgrimage for Christians. The Babylonians, Assyrians, Nestorians, and later the Muslims all believed that after the waters receded, the ark came to rest on Mount Cudi.
