It stands on a small island within the Aslantas Dam reservoir, across from the Karatepe-Aslantas Open-Air Museum. The hill itself was settled during the Iron Age and was enclosed by fortress walls. This was followed by remains from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. A late-Roman agricultural estate, a villa rustica, occupied the terrace on the eastern side of the hill. The finds suggest that this estate dated from the late 4th to early 5th century AD and the first half of the 6th century AD, and that it was likely abandoned in the second quarter of the 6th century.
