Editor's Note

Kumkale consists of a three-story-tall keep and a rectangular courtyard set on its western side, fitted with rounded corner towers. In 1978, a team from Istanbul University carried out a rescue excavation here, uncovering pottery fragments dating to the 11th and 12th centuries AD, and at the latest to the 13th century.
