Editor's Note
In 1909, the Armenians of the Çukurova region, principally in Adana, rose up against the Ottoman state. To suppress this uprising, Koca Cemal Pasha, one of the leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress, was appointed governor of Adana with full authority. While serving as governor of Adana, Cemal Pasha was invited to Kadirli by Karamüftüzade Arif Ağa, a member of the General Provincial Assembly. When Cemal Pasha arrived in Kadirli, he was unable to cross the Savrun Stream to reach the town center. Some of the local people mounted their horses and lined up at the crossing point, enabling Cemal Pasha to pass into the town.
