Kalabaktepe formed the center of archaic Miletos. Here lay the settlement core of the famous metropolis that Herodotus called the jewel or pearl of Ionia, that was responsible for founding numerous colonies on the Black Sea, and that is regarded as one of the largest and wealthiest poleis (cities) of the archaic Mediterranean. To the south, Kalabaktepe is enclosed by a wall that continues eastward and outlines the settlement area of archaic Miletos. The full extent of the wall, and thus the true size of the archaic city, is not known.
