Binbir Kilise ("the Thousand and One Churches"), located 50 km north of Karaman on the slopes of Karadağ, is known to have become the region's most important religious center during the Byzantine period. Considered sacred even in Hittite times, the area was, in late antiquity, a stop for pilgrims traveling from Europe to Jerusalem and was regarded as one of Christianity's three most important religious centers. The Binbir Kilise region, much of which consists of funerary structures, contains numerous churches, monasteries, monumental tombs, and historic buildings.
