Editor's Note
It is dated to the reign of Murad IV. As the legends tell it, Ziya Efendi was one of the saints who lived in the era of Sultan Selim I (Yavuz Sultan Selim). According to the story, when Selim I marched east in 1514 to fight Shah Ismail, he followed the Konya-Karaman-Ayrancı road. When the army reached the Ayrancı area, they looked for a bridge to cross the stream and came to Ziya Efendi's bridge. Ziya Efendi would not let the army pass. When the matter was reported to the sultan, Selim, angered, declared, "I will not cross the coward's bridge; let the floods take me if they will," and ordered his soldiers to cross.
