Editor's Note
Gozlukule Mound, the site of the original settlement of Tarsus and today located in the centre of the district, was excavated and studied by an American team led by Hetty Goldman as a Bryn Mawr College project between 1935-39 and 1947-49. Published in three volumes from the 1950s onward, the results of these Goldman-era excavations form one of the foundational reference works of Anatolian archaeology. Understood to have been founded in the Neolithic period some 9,000 years ago, this settlement is known to have been inhabited continuously and without interruption until the Early Islamic period.
