Editor's Note
Excavations at the mound were begun in 1937 by the British archaeologist J. Garstang and continued intermittently until 1948. Before the excavations of that period, the height of the hill was 25 meters, and 33 layers were identified in the mound. Excavations were resumed in 1993 by Prof. Dr. Veli Sevin of Istanbul University and Prof. Dr. Isabella Caneva of the Sapienza University of Rome. As a result of these archaeological excavations, it was determined that the mound consisted not of 33 but of 60 layers, and that settlement here began 9,000 years ago, in the Neolithic Age.
