Editor's Note
Opened in 1884 and run by Saraçzâde Mahmut, the Ziya Paşa Casino took its name from Ziya Paşa, the well-known statesman and poet who had served as governor of Adana at the time. Since the land where the building stood belonged to Ziya Paşa, the place was named after him. Today the casino is the building located north of the present post office, used as the postal parceling service. The venue first operated as a reading house, then became a coffeehouse, and finally, under the name casino, served Mersin and its people.
