Editor's Note
The historic city walls in central Bodrum are among the most important surviving structures of the ancient city of Halicarnassus. These walls were built in the 4th century BC, during the reign of the Carian satrap Mausolus. About 5 kilometres of the roughly 7-kilometre-long walls have survived to the present day. Among the best-known parts of the walls are the Myndos Gate, the Mylasa Gate, the Pedesa Gate and watchtowers. This monumental structure served both as a defence and to mark the city's boundaries. The walls were built by the Carians, one of the native peoples of Anatolia.
