The cemetery has been registered by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as a cultural asset requiring protection. Hassa and its surroundings were the scene of raids by various Turkish tribes from the 9th century onward; the region first came under independent Turkish rule during the Tulunid period and then joined the Anatolian Seljuk realm in 1084. Changing hands amid the Crusader invasions and the conquests of Saladin in the 11th and 12th centuries, the region was incorporated into the domain of the Mamluk Turks in 1268.
