Editor's Note
Located in the center of the Yumurtalık district, Aigeai was an important port city in antiquity in the Cilicia Pedias (Plain Cilicia) region, east of the Ceyhan River and west of the Gulf of İskenderun. The city was called Aigeai in the Hellenistic period, Aegeae in the Roman period, Ajazzo or Lajazzo in the Middle Ages, and Ayas in later periods. According to its coins, the city's history reaches back to the 2nd century BC. The ancient authors Pausanias, Tacitus, and Strabo mention Aigeai in their works. Aegeae was free during the Roman imperial period and served as a strategically important naval base.
