Editor's Note
Just outside the village of Elmalı, which belongs to the town of Gökova in Ula, behind the rear part of the cemetery, is an open-air sanctuary built for the mother goddess Cybele. Traces of the sanctuary are found on rocks of various sizes. A large boulder was carved to form 7 steps. The top of another rock was carved flat, and it is thought that an idol of the goddess once stood here. Many of the rocks bear grooves cut for placing votive offerings and sacred stelae. The Elmalı Altar is thought to be the largest open-air sanctuary in the Caria region and dates back to … BC.
